“It is the sum of life’s ordinary moments that make them extraordinary.”
My name is Michelle Seelig and I am an artist who believes art is a way of connecting with our personal stories. I think the art we hang on our walls should celebrate who we are and what is important to us.
My work explores our human experience of home, family and belonging. Home is where life and love are captured in the ordinary moments and I make work that captures and pays tribute to the ‘everyday’.
My newest series of charcoal and pencil drawings focus on small, fleeting moments, expressions captured in the gesture of a child’s hand, the tilt of a head or the tension of a leg, that help us recognise each other in the common human experience.
My artworks sit comfortably amongst the noise and clutter of modern family life and reminds us to celebrate it.
Here’s a bit of my story….
I live in Melbourne, Australia with my partner, two children and a long trail of creative projects.
I love to make work that is accessible and beautiful, and still expresses how I see my world and the people in it.
I am largely self-taught as a visual artist. Straight out of school I completed a Bachelor Of Education with a double major in Dance and Photography. Whilst freelancing as a dancer and choreographer for a few years I became increasingly interested in other art forms as a means of expression. l completed a Masters Degree in Art Therapy and, with every intention of becoming a practitioner, I was unexpectedly struck and fell deeply and passionately in love with the art-making process and my life took a sharp turn. It was like an awakening. My muse emerged from the sidelines and I began to draw, paint and create furiously and prolifically. I felt alive and energised. I was open to possibilities, enchanted by what emerged and I made art like a woman who had been set free from captivity.(You can read more in the Bio over here).
And now….
I feel like the work that we do is our legacy. My creative practice spans more than 20 years. I have set up and run creative businesses in that time, worked for myself and others as a designer, run workshops and classes that support others in their creative journey, and now that my children are a bit older I feel that it is time for me to take my work to a wider audience…..that’s you!
