For the past 20 years Melbourne artist Michelle Seelig has used drawing as a means of processing life’s experiences, so when creative block edged its way into her studio-life anxiety followed close behind.
Her upcoming solo exhibition, Rainbows In The Roof, signifies her newfound freedom and the return of her creative flow. She draws on the popular rainbow imagery of her 1970’s childhood as a motif that signifies a shift from the darkness into the light. Once the storm begins to subside and the sun begins to emerge there is a brief, beautiful moment of transition, when a rainbow appears. This show is a celebration of that moment, where the order of things is restored.
The themes in Michelle’s work centre around home and belonging, using imagery that takes us into life’s ordinary moments and layers them richly with meaning. She creates large, bold, black and white drawings using a unique method of meditatively rubbing charcoal into the surface of the paper. This results in rich tones and texture, bringing depth to her large organic shapes..
This body of work tells a story of liberation that comes with reconciling the wild and wilful ways of a creative mind.
